What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945. Vincent Coleman, a railway dispatcher, controlled the busy freight- and passenger-rail traffic coming and going from the Halifax peninsula. He was about to flee his office when he realized that trains were due to arrive. Coleman stayed at his post, tapping out a message on his telegraph key, warning stations up the line to stop any trains from entering Halifax.
