CRANE WORLD (Mundo Grúa) is an Argentine film released in 1999. It is the first feature film by director Pablo Trapero, made at the age of 26. It was filmed with a $20,000 grant from the Hubert Bals Fund of the Netherlands, which allowed for filming in Comodoro Rivadavia. It also received support from the National Arts Fund and the Universidad del Cine. It was a huge success upon its release, running for over three months. In a survey of the 100 best films in Argentine cinema conducted by the Pablo Ducrós Hicken Film Museum in 2000, the film reached number 9. In a new version of the survey organized in 2022 by the specialized magazines La vida útil, Taipei, and La tierra quema, presented at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, the film reached number 39. Synopsis: Rulo (Luis Margani), a fifty-year-old crane operator, with fleeting fame in his past and currently overweight, carries with dignity the weight of a life filled with too many disappointments and a few fleeting moments of glory. Today, divorced and with a pathetic but lovable teenage son in his care, he tries to sustain his miserable apartment and fight the threat of unemployment. Cast: Luis Margani as Rulo Daniel Valenzuela as Torres Adriana Aizemberg as Adriana Federico Esquerro as Claudio Graciana Chironi as Rulo's Mother Roly Serrano as Walter Alfonso Rementería as Sartori Mario Núñez as Chief Armando Production: The director was inspired to make the film by the installation of a high-rise crane at the intersection of 9 de Julio and Independencia Avenues in Buenos Aires. After this, he began filming with a 16mm camera and presented the proposal to the Dutch Hubert Bals Fund. In addition to financial support from this organization, he received a grant of 5,000 Argentine pesos at the time (1998) from the National Endowment for the Arts. Due to the filming budget, direct sound was used, as well as the participation of various friends and family members as part of the cast. The film was also shot over weekends. Filming took place in the cities of Buenos Aires and Comodoro Rivadavia.
