Liberal leader Mark Carney defended Liberal incumbent Paul Chiang Monday when asked why he had not yet removed the Toronto-riding candidate, after he made “deeply offensive” comments suggesting Conservative rival Joe Tay should be turned over to the Chinese consulate to collect a $183,000 bounty placed on him by Hong Kong police. “He’s apologized for his comments, he’s apologized directly to me, he’s apologized directly to the individual, he has a long record of service and he’s going to continue his candidacy,” Carney told reporters. Opposing party leaders, Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh, however, condemned Carney for not removing Chiang. “I find it incredible that Mark Carney would allow someone to run for his party that called for a Canadian citizen to be handed over to a foreign government on a bounty. A foreign government that would almost certainly execute that Canadian citizen,” Conservative leader Poilievre said. “For Mark Carney to say that, ‘I’m going to accept this candidate’ really sends a message that that type of commentary ultimately is acceptable because he’s not removing him as a candidate,” NDP leader Singh said.
