Gareth Edwards is the director of The Creator, the 2023 film starring John David Washington, about a war between humans and the intelligent robots that we created. It was nominated for an Oscar for its Visual Effects. Gareth started as a visual effect artists himself, and the following is a conversation we had about how he has learned to make a film’s budget go a lot further than a normal Hollywood blockbuster, by dispensing with the expensive meticulous VFX planning, and instead - shooting first, and working out the CGI later. It’s an approach to visual effects that he kind of pioneered on his first film Monsters.
