Just arrived at The Garage 1937 MG TA – with correct MPJG Engine Introduced in 1936, the MG TA marked the beginning of the all-new T-Series and replaced the earlier P-Type Midget. Powered by MG’s overhead-valve 1292cc engine, the TA was a noticeably larger and more refined car, offering improved comfort and a roomier cockpit while retaining the engaging character that defined the marque. The TA also benefited from hydraulic brakes and, at £222 when new, represented excellent value for money for the standard two-seater. Production continued until the spring of 1939, with a total of 3,003 examples built. Originally registered in Bournemouth to a Mr Gurney, she later re-emerged in Edinburgh in 1969 as a restoration project, although no work was carried out at that time due to the owner’s ill health. The car was subsequently acquired by Ken West of West Cheshire Restorations, who undertook its restoration. In 2006, the present owner acquired the MG in part-finished condition, with the agreement that West Cheshire Restorations would complete the work. The result is a matching-numbers example, retaining its original MPJG engine and recorded on the MG Car Club T-Type Register. During current ownership, the car has been carefully maintained by Paul Myatt of G H Myatt Limited, with sympathetic improvements and regular servicing. Works include Alfin brake drums, a crack-tested engine, heat shielding, fuel tank attention, oil warning light installation, and ongoing mechanical checks. Used sparingly, the MG runs well and has been enjoyed on club events, including visits to Pre-War Prescott and touring in Norfolk. As ever, this MG TA represents a well-documented and carefully looked-after example of an ever-popular pre-war sports car, suited to continued enjoyment.
