How can ropeway construction become more sustainable without compromising performance? In this exclusive interview, Markus Sigrist, Managing Director of LEITNER Schweiz AG, shares insights from the Lenzerheide chairlift project—a model of innovation, sustainability, and smart engineering. One of the biggest challenges was retrieving and analyzing decades-old structural data to reuse existing tower foundations. With thousands of archived installations, locating original paper-based calculations was a complex but crucial step in minimizing environmental impact. Together with the client, LEITNER made a strategic decision: maintain transport capacity with a new four-seater chairlift, while reusing as much of the existing infrastructure as possible. This approach significantly reduced material use and construction footprint. Sustainability is also embedded in the energy strategy: Photovoltaic systems are now integrated into station roofs Wind energy is being explored for mountain applications The goal: reduce energy consumption and support climate-conscious operations This project reflects LEITNER’s commitment to sustainable ropeway development, infrastructure reuse, and renewable energy integration in alpine environments.
