Medical name for shoulder blade. Located on posterolateral superior aspect of ribcage. Fairly triangular shaped. Superior border, lateral border (AKA axillary border) and medial border (AKA vertebral border). Superior angle, inferior angle and lateral angle. Numerous muscles and ligaments attachment. Posterior: Spine of scapula (AKA scapular spine) – Prominent ridge. Runs medial to lateral at a superior angle. Supraspinatus fossa – Superior to spine. Origin site of supraspinatus. Infraspinatus fossa – Inferior to spine. Origin site of infraspinatus. Anterior: Subscapularis fossa Coracoid Process - Small hook like structure in anterior superior lateral aspect of scapula. Serves as an attachment of several ligaments and several muscles including Pec Minor. Acromion - Continuation of scapular spine. Hooks anterior and articulates with clavicle (collar bone) to form acromioclavicular joint.
