This webinar examines the origins of the Ukrainian Language Education Centre (ULEC) within the broader context of multiculturalism and bilingual education in Canada. Founded in 1978 as the Ukrainian Language Resource Centre (ULRC) within the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), the Centre was created to support Alberta’s Ukrainian Bilingual Program and later became ULEC in 1986. From its beginning, the organization operated at the intersection of education, language policy, and politics. Using theoretical frameworks developed by Anthony Giddens and William Sewell, the presentation explores how individuals, institutions, and social structures interacted in the process of establishing and sustaining bilingual education. Special attention is given to the contributions of key figures such as Manoly Lupul and Peter Savaryn, highlighting how individual initiative can shape institutions and leave a lasting impact on educational communities. Mark Pyzyk is the Data Analyst and Facilitator at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California. He is also the Co-Director of the Greek Coin Finds of Ukraine project, an international collaborative initiative dedicated to cataloguing ancient Greek coins (550 BCE–100 CE) discovered on the territory of modern Ukraine.
