In this video, we analyze the opening of the Violin Sonata in A major by César Franck, one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Composed in 1886, the sonata was written as a wedding gift for the great Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, who premiered the work that same year. Today, it remains a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire. The opening movement is remarkable for its gentle atmosphere and harmonic richness. Rather than dramatic gestures, Franck begins with a flowing, intimate dialogue between violin and piano. The music unfolds with a sense of calm lyricism, yet beneath the surface lies a highly sophisticated harmonic language. This passage already reveals many signature elements of Franck’s style: highly chromatic harmony that constantly reshapes the tonal landscape, smooth stepwise voice-leading that creates a seamless musical flow, rich seventh and ninth chords that add warmth and color, a harmonic palette often associated with the French sound world, anticipating aspects of musical Impressionism. Franck’s writing combines the structural depth of German Romanticism with the coloristic sensitivity of the French tradition, producing a language that feels both expressive and refined.
