Is academic freedom under threat in today’s universities? In this moderated panel discussion sponsored by @HeterodoxAcademy Jonathan Rauch, Mary Kate Cary, John Tomasi, and Rikki Schlott examine the growing pressures facing academic freedom and open debate in higher education. Drawing on years of experience across academia, journalism, and public policy, the panel explores political violence, cancellation dynamics, administrative overreach, and government intervention, asking whether universities are merely being stress-tested or are undergoing a deeper structural breakdown. The panel debates the erosion of faculty authority, ideological conformity on campus, and whether meaningful reform can emerge from within academia or must come from external pressure. Touching on artificial intelligence, declining enrollment, and the weakening of civic and free-speech literacy, the discussion looks ahead to what the future of the university may hold if institutions fail to remain genuine marketplaces of ideas.
