Understanding the nomenclature of spur gears is essential for proper gear selection and design. The key nomenclature parameters include the pitch diameter, which is the diameter of the gear at the point where the teeth intersect with the pitch circle, the module, which determines the tooth size and spacing, the number of teeth, which affects the gear ratio, the face width, which determines the amount of surface contact, and the pressure angle, which is the angle between the gear teeth and the plane of rotation. Other important parameters include the addendum and dedendum, which determine the tooth shape, and the clearance, which is the distance between the meshing teeth.
