The public knows Phenol from chemical face peels...we in the science lab use it to isolate nucleic acids (DNA/RNA). And we handle Phenol very very very carefully, make sure nothing is spilled and that everything is trashed according to the most stringent restrictions. Why? Phenol is one of the most toxic substances we handle (in my lab and area) and the rules to use it in the lab are strict. My message is to a) know your chemical and be aware of the risks and what to do in case of an accident and b) stay calm in any case. Then, the lab is always a safe place and we can focus on the fun: isolating RNA from yeast to study the crazy molecular world inside of cells!
