Early September in southern Algonquin Park, I set out solo from Smoke Lake on a 4-day, 3-night kayak and portaging trip. My route took me through Little Raccoon Lake, Lake Louisa, and Lac Bonnechere — with rugged portages, incredible wildlife, and a few surprises along the way. From the Devil’s Staircase portage to sunrise loon calls, this trip had everything: tough carries, quiet lakes, curious otters, and peaceful campsites deep in the backcountry. If you love canoe tripping, backcountry camping, or exploring Algonquin’s quieter routes, this video’s for you. 🌲 Trip Highlights: Remote backcountry route from Smoke Lake to Lac Bonnechere Wildlife encounters (otters, loons & more) Challenging portages including the Devil’s Staircase Solo travel in Algonquin’s southern lakes 0:00 Introduction 0:19 Day 1 3:10 Wildlife on Ragged Lake 7:48 The Devil's Staircase 15:18 Camping on Little Raccoon Lake 17:49 Day 2 19:42 The Double Devil's Staircase 24:11 Otters!
