One of two SNES Super FX games (This uses the FX2 chip) only released in PAL, the other being Dirt Racer. Winter Gold was a late SNES title released in 1996 and published by Nintendo. The game starts with one of the most impressive opening intros seen on the system with what appears to be rotoscoped 3D graphics to a fast pumping music style video cut with clips from the different events. The working title was known as FX Skiing and this name can be seen flashing by in the opening intro. For a Super Nintendo this has some of the most advance 3D graphics seen on the system. However, on the flip side of that for a 1996 game it has some of the worst graphics going. In fact it's all too easy to see why Nintendo of America and Japan didn't release it. Winter Gold features six winter sport events and these are Snowboarding Halfpipe, Ski Jump, Bobsleigh, Luge, Downhill Skiing and Aerial Skiing. Not a huge amount to choose from and no skating or curling events means there's not a lot of variety. Added to that Bobsleigh & Luge are almost identical apart from some minor changes. Downhill Skiing is by far the most enjoyable event to play, where as Snowboarding and Aerial Skiing are the hardest to master and if you don't have the manual with the moves and combo list, rather hard to understand. While not an official Olympic game, it's clear the game is based on the format. It includes four locations in-game each with slightly different tracks and background colour shades. Albertville in France, Lillehammer in Norway, Salt Lake City in USA and a forth unlockable city in Nagano Japan. (The in-game extras themselves are rather poorly documented on the internet.) While the presentation is outstanding and the music is also rather catchy. The rest of the game is a little hit and miss, it has some charm with the FX2 chip. Ultimately it's too short for it's own good and the developers knew this as the difficulty is set to extremely hard to make up for this. Requiring flawless runs to get gold medals, that will send all, but the most harden of gamers running for the hills. An interesting piece of SNES history, but when you consider the Sega Saturn port of Athlete Kings/Decathlete came out the same year, it just can't hold a candle to Sega's sports titan and many other sports titles released that year on other formats. It was a game just way too later to the Super Nintendo party. ウィンターゴールド 日本では発売されなかった Also known as: FX Skiing (Working Title) Release: 1996 Developer: Funcom Productions AS / ファンコム Publisher: Nintendo / 任天堂 Format: Super Nintendo (SNES) / Super Famicom (SFC) / スーパーファミコン Winter Gold has never been released to date on any other format, there is no digital re-release at present.
