🔋 Self-heated lithium leisure batteries tested - FAIL! 🔋 Steve and Kate (founders of Roamer) have spent the last 6 ski seasons in their campervan, wild camping across the Alps while chasing the snow. And system designer Alex Frood has spent the last 3 winters testing the extreme limits of his campervan in the Arctic, reaching temperatures of minus 37, So it’s fair to say we know a thing or two about winter vanlife, and using lithium batteries in the cold! Roamer DON’T use cell heaters in their batteries and that was a very deliberate choice. The BMS has this function and it’s a cheap and easy addition, however we always felt that using cell heaters on large prismatic cells would be very difficult, if not impossible to implement safely. When cells are 7cm thick and weigh 5kg each, and you’re strapping 8 of these together in a pack, a thin bit of heat film wrapped around the outside is never going to heat them all the way through. It’s like putting a giant frozen turkey into a hot frying pan and expecting it to defrost evenly. In this video, we take a self-heated 105Ah LiFePO4 battery and put it in the freezer, before hooking up to a high power charger. It’s pretty fair to say that this was a big failure.
