Operation Deadlight was the code name for the Royal Navy operation of November 1945 – February 1946 to scuttle German U-boats surrendered to the Allies after the defeat of Germany near the end of World War II. The Royal Navy carried out the operation, and planned to tow the submarines to three areas about 100 miles (160 km) north-west of Ireland and sink them. When Operation Deadlight began, the navy found that many of the U-boats were in poor condition, combined with poor weather, meant that many of the boats sank before they reached the scuttling areas. On 17 June 1945, U-2511 a Type XXI Elektroboot was transferred from Bergen, and arrived at Londonderry Port on 21 June for Operation Deadlight. The U-boat was sunk on 7 January 1946. U-2511 saw action in the very last moments of the Second World War and was based on a completely new submarine concept. Had they arrived earlier, they might have changed the outcome of the Battle of the Atlantic and more. The concept itself inspired the submarine design for the next two decades. Even more, the hull design of one of the Elektroboots was adopted and used in the development of the first nuclear submarine. 66M, Bottom Time 35mins, Deco 70mins
