Does your dog jump on you, the couch, or the counter even when you say “off”? Do you feel like they just don’t understand what you’re asking? In this video, I show you how to properly teach the meaning and intention of the “off” cue by first training up and off in a clear, structured way using positive reinforcement. Most dogs are not being stubborn. They simply have never been taught what “off” actually means. What this video covers • Why yelling “down” or “off” often fails • The difference between “down” and “off” in dog training • How to teach the up cue clearly • How to teach the off cue so your dog understands expectations • How to apply up and off to real-life situations • How this helps with jumping, couch boundaries, and counter surfing By teaching both directions, your dog learns: • Where they are allowed to be • When they are invited up • When they need to get off calmly This creates clarity instead of conflict. Real-life uses for up and off • Jumping on people • Couch and furniture boundaries • Counter surfing • Place and boundary training • Trick training and confidence building This method is force-free, clear, and works for puppies, adult dogs, and rescue dogs. Training notes • Dogs do not understand language without being taught • Cues must be trained, not repeated • Clear expectations reduce frustration for everyone Want more help? I teach boundary skills, impulse control, and real-life manners in my group and private dog training programs serving Glendale, Phoenix, and the West Valley. 👍 Like, comment, and subscribe for educational dog training 💬 Questions welcome in the comments 🔔 Share with a pet parent dealing with jumping ⏱️ YouTube Chapters 00:00 – Why dogs keep jumping 00:22 – Why yelling “down” doesn’t work 00:54 – The difference between down and off 01:25 – What off actually means 01:57 – Why teaching up matters 02:30 – Teaching up on a platform 03:24 – Teaching off clearly 03:56 – Using different objects 04:33 – Generalizing up and off 05:12 – Applying up and off in real life 05:45 – Fixing jumping with clarity 06:13 – Final training recap #DogTraining #StopDogJumping #PositiveReinforcement #ForceFreeTraining #DogBehavior #BoundaryTraining #PetParentEducation #RescueDogTraining #dogobedience
