On the morning of Sunday, March 2, 2025, we began our drive to Alstrom Point. It is a 4,685-foot elevation landmark located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in southern Utah. It is situated 12 miles northeast of the town of Page. Located at the southwest region of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area along the border with Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, the drive to Alstrom Point offers incredible scenery and excitement for the adventurous explorer. There are no facilities and no shade anywhere on Romana Mesa including Alstrom Point. Be confident that your vehicle can drive on these roads. If the vehicle has high enough clearance, it can. If you can't clear that first creek crossing, your vehicle cannot handle the drive. There wasn't much water in the creek the day we were here. For a large stretch of the drive, you will be on a rough, unimproved road. You need to have a high clearance 4WD vehicle. You will not make it to Alstrom point without 4WD and even with 4WD, you may bottom out in certain areas. Ideally, your vehicle should have at least 10-inches of clearance to be safe. The last part of the trail that leads to Alstrom Point is a rock garden. There is not trail in this area, you just do your best to pick a good like to transition through this area. It's a lot of fun, but very bumpy. The video we took doesn't to this area justice in how challenging it can be to navigate through it. You will definitely need 4WD to get through the Rock Garden. Finally, we arrived at Alstrom Point. This iconic landmark of the Lake Powell area is a cape that extends south into Lake Powell between Padre Bay and Warm Creek Bay. You'll find stunning scenery high from the cliffs down on Lake Powell. Alstrom Point rises nearly 1,000 feet above the lake when it's full. It is composed primarily of Entrada Sandstone, similar to Romana Mesa immediately south, and Gunsight Butte 1.5 miles to the east. The Entrada Sandstone, which was originally deposited as sandy mud on a tidal flat, is believed to have formed about 160 million years ago during the Jurassic period as a giant sand sea, the largest in Earth's history. Hoodoos and other geologic features along the route are a feast for the eyes, even before reaching the main course of Alstrom Point. When you finally reach Alstrom Point, the view will take your breath away. Overlooking Lake Powell, the sight of its deep blue waters contrasting with the red rock canyons rising above the water is simply spectacular. The changing light adds a magical touch to the already stunning scenery. You can see Gunsight Bay, Lake Powell, and the surrounding red buttes and sandstone formations, with Navajo Mountain as a stunning backdrop. From Alstrom Point, you can see straight across Lake Powell. Looking down on a cross-section of the lake, you have a perfect viewpoint of the lake’s finger-like canyons. The best part is, there is seldom a crowd at the viewpoint. That’s because as pretty as it is, it is equally as difficult to get to as it takes some effort to get to this spectacular viewpoint. This is where we opened a bottle of wine and celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary. Eventually it was time to leave. On our way out we took a side trip into Crosby Canyon which is an unmaintained out-and-back dirt road that accesses Lake Powell's Warm Creek Bay. It is one of the only places to access the water on the Utah side of Lake Powell. The road winds through an undulating rock canyon that gets tight enough in places that it would be dangerous to be present during a flash flood. Once the canyon opens out to the lake, the road becomes soft sand that can be deep enough to require using four-wheel drive, and we definitely used it here. The lake has been drained to historically low levels over the last few years, so accessing the water requires driving on what would normally be lake bottom. This is deep sand when dry and can become impassable when wet. It took us several attempts to find a trail that actually took us to the water. Eventually we made it to the shoreline. We took some photos and then began our trip back out of this area, and then ultimately back to Page where we got a well deserved dinner.
