[TAS] Time Crisis II: The 4.2 Million Dollar Man

A.K.A.: Robert Baxter Gets A Firmware Upgrade Turn on captions for commentary on the run. Unlike my previous TAS videos for this same game, this one is actually good. 4.2 million points, 100% accuracy, full headshot combos (wherever possible), extremely fast and early shooting, and no major mistakes as far as I can tell. I put everything I learned about scoring into this, and I think the results are pretty insane. The recording lags noticeably at multiple points throughout the game, which I didn't even know was a possibility when using PCSX2's internal capture functionality. If I had, I would've double checked every recording, but unfortunately, I only caught this once the entire TAS was complete, and due to how this thing was made, re-recording past segments was simply not a possibility. Two codes/patches were used while playing. One to force progressive scan (interlaced video, yuck!), and one to disable the screen flash when shooting (otherwise, this video would've been completely unwatchable). Here they are: Disable screen flash patch=1,EE,20214A44,extended,00000000 No interlacing patch=1,EE,202AE22C,extended,31420001 Some facts: You can shoot once every two frames (30 shots/s), which is even faster than (arcade) Crisis Zone's machine gun, which fires once every three frames (20 shots/s). I had originally completed a full TAS shooting once every three frames, which net me 3.98 million, but after uploading the video, I realized you could shoot even faster by using the progressive scan mode (at least, I think that was it; seems kind of random), so I redid the whole playthrough from scratch. Shots take 3 frames to appear on screen after the frame you pulled the trigger on, unless you are in the "one shot every 3 frames" mode, in which case it takes 4 frames. [Pull trigger] → [location decided] → [nothing] → [bullet hole appears] Hits register on the first frame the bullet hole appears on screen, even before the hit count goes up and the hit effect appears. The longest amount of time between shots that lets you keep your combo is 50 frames (0.833 sec), just like arcade. I'd read somewhere it's 60 frames (1 sec) on PS2, but that's incorrect, at least for the US version. Maybe there's region differences there. After you first hit an enemy, you have 40 frames to land follow-up shots, even if they're still on screen. Hitting an enemy in the head causes them disappear 40 frames later also, while body and limb shots cause them to stay on screen for a little longer, even if you can't shoot them anymore. So headshots not only net you a better score, they also let you get faster times just like in the original Time Crisis. The fastest time you can reload and shoot again in is 17 frames. Let go of the pedal for 10 frames, then press it for 7 frames, and you can shoot again. Related to the above point, you can shoot even if you're not fully out of cover, which lets you dodge bullets and shoot enemies at the same time. The earliest time you can pull the trigger after "ACTION" is on the frame where the counter reads "39.83", which is 10 frames after the "ACTION" message itself appears. The shot will still take 4 frames to register after that, as normal. The further away enemies are, the more generous their hitboxes. You don't need to nail the exact pixel they're on, you can shoot the air around them and still hit them, which allows you to hit some of them early, before their head actually becomes visible. At certain points, losing your no-miss bonus is actually unavoidable, even if you don't actually miss your shots. These points are commented on in the captions. All bonus enemies on PS2 are worth 6000 points, unlike arcade, where they give you either 6000 (5000+500+500, just like PS2), 10500 (5000+5000+500), or even 15000 (5000 x 3).
