The violence escalated on October 1, 2019, despite the city being under virtual lockdown since the morning, with many shops and MTR railway stations closed. Marches and rallies quickly descended into chaos, including a police officer opening fire with a live round at a protester for the first time. Protesters vandalised government offices and MTR railway stations, as well as businesses seen to have close ties with China or for voicing disapproval with the ongoing protests.
