In this video, I break down Canon’s July 2025 firmware update for the EOS R5, version 2.2.0. Unlike many of Canon’s other cameras that only received a bare-minimum security feature, the R5 update adds several new features and fixes. The headline addition is a new 6-digit system password, implemented to comply with EU directives. While intended to improve security, Canon’s clunky interface makes it frustrating to use, and I explain why most photographers will likely disable it immediately. Beyond the password prompt, the firmware introduces two new networking features: online firmware updates directly from the camera and support for Canon’s Software Development Assistance Kit. While online updating sounds convenient, I recommend caution; at least for the time being. The update also brings practical workflow improvements, like auto-protecting images based on rating, partial support for CFExpress over 8TB and Peripheral Coordinated IS for the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM lens. Canon also resolved multiple outstanding bugs, including HDMI output interruptions and Bluetooth interference issues. Finally, I wrap up with my thoughts on what this means for the EOS R5. It’s encouraging to see Canon continue to improve this camera even after releasing the R5 Mark II. However, the new password system feels like wasted engineering effort compared to features creators would have truly benefited from.
