After flying to Gdansk, Poland, we crossed in to Russia on a direct bus and set off to explore the city, its history, the food and find out how people here in Kaliningrad, Russia's most European city live. The border crossing in to Russia was a nerve-wracking one, but after arriving in Kaliningrad everything was fine. Kaliningrad joined the Soviet Union in 1945, becoming its most western province. Before becoming part of the USSR, Kaliningrad (formerly known as Konnigsburg) was part of Germany (and Prussia prior to that). Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been part of the Russian Federation. We wanted to see how much of the German / European architecture was left in the city and how much of it was Russian / Soviet. Is the mentality of the Russians in Kaliningrad different to that of 'mainland' Russia? What major differences are there between Kaliningrad and neighbouring European Baltic countries, like Poland and Lithuania? We set off to find out.
