Mönckebergstraße , also called Mö for short , is one of the main shopping streets in Hamburg and, together with Spitalerstraße , which tapers to Mönckebergstrasse, forms the main entrance to Hamburg's city center . The inner-city street, built between Hamburg City Hall and Hamburg Central Station , which had opened three years earlier, was opened to traffic on October 26, 1909 and is named after Mayor Johann Georg Mönckeberg (1839–1908), who was chairman of the redevelopment commission from 1897. By Senate resolution of December 13, 2022, the street is also dedicated to his daughter-in-law Vilma Mönckeberg-Kollmar (1892–1985). Spitalerstrasse in Hamburg is one of the city's central shopping streets .
