Story Bridge turned 80 two weeks ago!!! Brisbane's Story Bridge opened for operation on July 6, 1940. This date came five years after construction commenced and fourteen years after initial recommendations for a river crossing at Kangaroo Point. Essentially, the Story Bridge was one of the then governments' three major public works projects, creating years of employment for many men during the Great Depression. The Story Bridge is the largest steel bridge designed, fabricated and constructed in Australia by Australians. Currently the bridge is repainted every seven years using 17,500 litres of paint. There is approximately 105,000 square metres of painted steel surfaces. Fun Facts!!! Story Bridge is the longest cantilever bridge in Australia. The bridge opened in July 6 1940 and was tolled until 1947 with a crowd of 37,000. With a bridge already across the Brisbane River, this new bridge was more a means of creating jobs and boosting the city’s morale. Four men died during the construction of the bridge. The bridge carries an average of 100,000 vehicles each day. A three metre-high safety barrier and free telephones linked to suicide prevention hotlines have been installed on the bridge. A consulting engineer behind the bridge's construction, John Bradfield, also designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
