Oil painting meets Darkwood world-building 🎨🌲 In this studio session, I continue working on an original oil portrait from my Darkwood series — introducing The Commissar of the Aeronautical Division. This character study focuses on texture, tonal range, and atmospheric detail, as I develop his green leather goggles, fur cap, and weathered flight jacket. This piece is all about experimentation and learning — pushing my oil painting techniques while building depth and realism through light, shadow, and layered colour. In this video, you’ll see: Building tonal range in green leather goggles Painting realistic fur using a fan brush technique Creating texture in a vintage-style flight jacket Working from photographic reference for fabric folds Blending wet-on-wet oil paint for cohesive tones Correcting mistakes and repainting (the beauty of oils!) Adding fine detail with a rigger brush Installing mirrored lenses for a striking final effect The jacket evolves from olive drab tones into cooler blue-greys as layers build — a reminder that oil painting is a process of discovery. You’ll also see how I repaint the fur collar after an unsuccessful first attempt, showing the honest, iterative nature of studio practice. The final detail? Self-adhesive mirrored lenses that reflect the viewer — reinforcing the mysterious presence of this Darkwood character.
