White Storks at Knepp

Thank you for watching! Keep up to date with information about how the season unfolds for Greta and Bartek here! To support the storks, please donate here: https://whitestorkproject.org/donate/ Thank you for any donations - they help us keep the live camera running as well as the rest of the work we do. Find out more about our work here: https://whitestorkproject.org/ Please be aware that the live chat function is not always monitored by project staff or volunteers and is regularly automatically cleared. If you have any questions or would like to let us know about your observations, please contact us through the website. 2026 Progress: First egg laid in the early hours of the morning at 02:02 on 16th March after mating at 01:48. Second egg laid around 03:10 in the morning of 18th March. A third egg has been laid, likely around the 20th March, but it was not obvious exactly when! The three eggs have been difficult to see from the image as the nest is so deep, but there have been glimpses of three eggs on the 24th and 25th March when the adults turn them A fourth egg has been visible since the 25th March but it is unclear when exactly it was laid! This live stream is showing a stork nest at Knepp Rewilding Project in Sussex. White Storks part of the project are ringed with blue plastic darvic rings on the left leg and metal BTO rings on the right ankle. Up until very recently, the birds on this nest have been known as Ania and Bartek. However, Ania has not been seen on the nest since for several weeks now and Greta GB5Z has bonded with Bartek. We don't know what has happened to Ania - staff continue to look for her in the fields she used to forage, and check camera traps, but she has not been seen. Greta hatched at Cotswold Wildlife Park in 2022 and was released at Knepp the same year. Last year, she reared chicks with a different male on the nest next door to the live camera. The male, Bartek, (GB18) is a rehabilitated bird from Warsaw Zoo in Poland. He has been part of the White Stork Project since 2017. The previous female, Ania, (GB5B) is also from Poland and has been with us since 2016. Ania and Bartek birds have been a bonded pair since 2020 when they built their first nest together. In 2021 they laid eggs on the same nest and these hatched. Sadly though, there was a severe thunderstorm and the chicks perished. In 2022 they successfully reared young for the first time and 3 young storks fledged the nest. Then in 2023 they had even more success with 4 chicks successfully fledging. This live camera started streaming for the first time in 2024 and showed the first egg being laid on March 9th. A total of 4 eggs were laid which started hatching on April 13th and were all hatched by April 16th. The four young all fledged at the end of June. They ringed under BTO license and were named by local schools: GBG9 - Isla, GBH0 - Ivy, GBH1 - Issy, GBH2 - Ivan 2025: Mating & nest building seen throughout Feb First egg is laid on the 8th March and hatched on 12th April 29th May: The three chicks are ringed in the evening (under license from the BTO). Unfortunately we are unable to confirm the results of sex from genetic testing. The rings read GBT5, GBT6, GBT7. By late July they no longer come back to the nest and in August they migrated. We hope to see them again! If you are interested in contributing to a brand new Citizen Science data collection project, please get in touch with us by emailing us through the website and stating that you would like to get involved! Someone will email you back with more information. Huge thanks to the brilliant team at Wildlife Windows Ltd for installing this camera. We hope you enjoy watching as the season unfolds!
