Tis with a heavy heart I have just seen the news the inimitable Shane MacGowan has sadly passed away today aged 65... Shane was indeed one of a kind in everything he did from his unique vocal style to his songwriting and even looks. For me it was all of those unique qualities about him that made me a lifelong fan of The Pogues and for over four decades brought me so much enjoyment listening too and watching him and the band perform... There was and only ever will be one Shane MacGowan and I am grateful that I was fortunate enough to be around when he gave to the world his very, very unique talents and a legacy that will live on forever... The Pogues - Dirty Old Town (Cargo Night) (1986) (HD)... Rare wee bit of old footage of The Pogues performing one of my favourite tracks of theirs "Dirty Old Town" on a Belgian TV show (Night Cargo) from 1986 with Shane MacGown simply being... well... Shane MacGowan... :-) Now one for Shane, who we lost last November. This song was originally written by Ewan MacColl, the father of Kirsty who you saw singing with Shane on the “Fairytale of New York” tracks on Christmas. It’s about the canal-split industrial town of Salford in north England. Ewan recorded it himself in 1983 and it then appears on the Pogues' 1985 album "Rum Sodomy & the Lash" (a charming Winston Churchill quote describing life in the Royal navy).
