Σέγεστα), originally Egesta (Ἐγεστα or Αἴγεστα) or Acesta is an ancient city on the Northern shore of Sicily, lying between Drepanum and Panormos and built, according to legend, the Trojans for the king Egesta (Acesta), after Aeneas sailed to Italy, were brought to the island of Sicily. The city was at the confluence of two rivers, one of which founders called Scamandros, the other Simonton. According to another legend, the city was founded by Greeks (companions of Philoctetes), who arrived in Sicily under the command of the Trojan Egesta before the landing of Aeneas on the Sicilian shore. In historical times the city was considered non-Greek (barbarian), and led a constant struggle with the Greek colonies, especially with the neighboring Selinunte. Agathocles in 307 BC devastated the city, partly killing the inhabitants, partly by selling them into slavery, populated Segesta settlers and called it Dicaeopolis. The death Agatocle, however, together with the remnants of the former population have returned to the city and its old name. Due to the alleged kinship of the Romans with the Trojans, and consequently with the inhabitants of Segesta, the last willingly went to the power of the Romans and thanks to bustling trade and a convenient harbour became a flourishing city.
