It was built by Esaias Compenius for Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, who was married to a sis­ter of Christian IV. King Christian had it installed in the chapel of Frederiksborg Castle in 1617, the same year the chapel was consecrated. Esaias Compenius, himself, brought the organ to Denmark and probably died during his stay here. The organ has 1001 pipes, all executed in choice woods. The ornamentation in silver, ivory, and ebony is unique, and its technical/musical construction reveals Compenius as an exceptional master of his profession. The Duke's conductor, Michael Praetorius, known in music history as a particularly knowledgeable musician, both in theory and in practice, undoubtedly had some influence on the organ. The first description of the organ comes from his pen (Syntagma Musicum 1619). The organ has 27 stops shared between 2 manuals and pedal board. It is tuned in the original meantone, which, particularly in older music, imparts a purer sound than the ordinary tuning of today. The pitch is a half tone higher than the modern concert pitch. Air is supplied by four hand-operated wedge­shaped bellows. The Compenius organ is preserved in its original condition, both inside and out. Frobenius and Sons restored the organ bellows in 1981-82. The organ was restored by stages from 1985 to 1992 by Mads Kjersgaard, at the beginning in collaboration with Jürgen Ahrend. The organ cases were restored in 1987-88 by Peder Moos of the Frederiksborg Museum's furniture preservation workshop.
