Through the Scope - the Phenom UHD Spotting Scope

Today we're taking the new Phenom UHD (Ultra-High Definition) Spotting Scope out for a spin. This is a look through the scope, taking in targets from 100 to 650 yards under the desert sun. Please note - the human eye mk.1 is significantly more capable at using a spotting scope than the camera we're using to film. While we try to keep up with the shifting light and high wind, your view in person will have considerably more detail. This spotting scope utilizes some significant upgrades over the scopes of old to give you a clear, crisp, and glare-free view of whatever it is you're shooting at. The large, 85mm objective lens gathers a significant amount of light, ensuring a bright view of your target. The weight of the glass is balanced with the magnesium alloy frame, which keeps the weight of the spotter as low as possible. To hone in on your target, a fine full-body helical focus ring gives you an easy access to fine focus adjustments. The mounting plate sits on an adjustable ring, allowing the scope to be tilted in whichever direction is needed. To top it all off, the eyepiece is replaceable with a still-growing selection of choices. In this video, we'll show the first two: the 20-60X eyepiece that comes in the kit, and the 33X MOA reticle eyepiece. Swapping one eyepiece for another is as simple as pushing a switch and twisting the eyepiece. 00:00 Overview An overview of the parts and features of the Phenom UHD spotting scope. Starting with the included protective wrap and moving all the way through the sunshade, I point out each of the features of the scope as I get it set up for a day at the range. 02:41 20X A view across the field at steel targets between 100 and 650 yards. There's a fair amount of mirage to deal with, but the impacts on steel stand out with no difficulty. 05:10 40X A quick peek at a mid-level zoom, focusing on the grid lines of paper targets. 06:19 60X Now looking at the high end of the magnification, it's time to take a peek at some bullet trace. I'm filming while more than a few people are shooting, so I'm not always certain who is firing at which target. Regardless of what they're shooting, the trace stands out in a delightful way. 07:45 Getting Zeroed Before Chris moves on to hitting some steel, we have him check his zero at 100 yards, and get some trace on a hole-through-hole shot. 08:18 650 Yards It's time to reach out farther and see the trace along the entire arc of the bullet. This is one of the more common distances we shoot at, so it's important to us that targets at this range are eminently visible. 09:30 33X Eyepiece The 33X (fixed magnification) eyepiece includes an MOA reticle in the bottom third. While the upper portion of your view is left totally open to look across the field, the lower T-shaped reticle is easily accessible to read target sizes and holdovers. Rather than run all the way out to your target, just take a measurement off the reticle. I'll also swing the scope up the mountainside to get a view above the ground-level mirage. With the mirage out of the way, distances past 700 yards pop easily into view. If you're doing some long-range hunting or just some bird watching, you'll get a view of whatever you're looking for. 15:13 Outro As I get the scope packed up, I'll run through an overview of the parts of the scope and how straightforward it is to use. Side note - with the protective covers for the objective and eyepiece hanging on the built-in clips, there's always a place to keep your eyepiece and objective lens caps. Just tuck the caps right into the covers, and they won't go missing. 16:13 Chris at 650 Time for some more trace and shots in 10-20mph winds.
