Meet the beautiful but deadly eyelash pit viper ( Bothriechis schlegelii ), has special scales above its eyes that look like tiny eyelashes - why they evolved these is up for some debate by scientists. In this video we explain some of the reasons, from helping them blend into plants and trees. The snakes are found in Central and South America especially in rainforests. They do come in many colours, but the yellow is probably what they are most famous for. They are great climbers and sit in ambush waiting for their prey, often waiting for a week at a time without moving. They have heat seeking pits that are located between their eye and nostril that allow them to detect the warm bodies of their prey. Interestingly, they give birth to live young, up to 20 baby snakes at a time!
