Can you tell me about how that happened? Born and raised in Calgary, #Alberta. When I was a kid growing up my parents were kinda messed up. They both had drinking problems and I found that using my imagination was a real incredible escape thing for me, growing up in a home that had a lot of chaos and alcoholism. And I just loved making up characters. I would be the kid on the block that would get everyone together, put the clothesline, put sheets up and then walk through, like I was on Broadway. That was me I was always pretending and making plays and casting them and never did I think I'd become an actor, but yeah. An award winning actor. that too. So, it was actually under the guidance of the amazing and awe inspiring Gordon Tootoosis that you took the step into acting. How did that happen? Gordon was a huge motivator in my life. I remember as a teenager I was going to an all Native school in Calgary, I was trying to create a #drama program there 'cause they had no drama. And I remember there was a play back in the day called The Ecstasy of Rita Joe. It's the only Native play out there. And I remember, I was trying to cast it at the school and get all the actors. Nobody showed up for rehearsals, nobody took anything serious. So, I was kinda like, man, I'll never be an actor. There's no Native people on TV. There's only a couple and one of them happens to be this amazing man named Gordon Tootoosis. Who turned out to be my friend's uncle. And he shows up at the house one day and I was like, another Native actor! It's like so rare, this is back in the 80s. And so me and Gordon sat up all night having tea that one night. And then I was like, I kinda like acting but I don't know, man. And then he was like, you know what, be true to yourself. And he really, really pushed me. And so we stayed in touch. And then finally he said, Michelle, if you wanna do this you gotta get out of Calgary. So I gave up everything and I moved to Vancouver. Gordon set me up with people out there to talk to, getting in touch with agents, I was like, 19. So, we had the opportunity to work on two different series together, which was amazing. I was a producer on both shows. One was Mixed Blessings and the other was a phenomenal breakthrough hit called Blackstone which you actually won a Gemini Award for Best Actress. And took me as your date, that night, Right, that was so fun. It was so awesome, it was so awesome. You know what's crazy is I remember we were just heading into season two of Blackstone and I remember I was in my hotel, right next door to this hotel we're at right now, and you called me up and you were like, Michelle, are you seated? And I was like, why, what's going on? I had just woken up and you said, you have been nominated for a Gemini Award. And I didn't even know what a Gemini was like I swear to God I was like, that is so cool. So for those who don't know the Gemini Award is the parallel to the Emmy Award in the United States. And they've since changed it to the Canadian Screen Awards. So you actually won the last Gemini Award that ever was for Best Actress. I did. The crazy part, that day, that day me and you 'member we were getting ready together? We ordered hors d'oeuvres and we went into the awards, and I swear to God I never thought that I was ever gonna win. My whole plan of going to the awards was to meet George Strombolopolous. Remember? So we stalked him 'cause I thought, I'm not gonna win, there's no way I will ever-- And we did meet him that night and You introduced me. That's right. And after you won the award I went up to him and I said, so you're gonna have Michelle on your show, right? And he brought me on his show. Yeah, so I'm on stage. They announce my name, and time stood still. I had no idea. I didn't even have a speech. And I got up on stage and that's when I said, I just wanna thank Jessie Szymanski, I can't even say her name, I'm so nervous. And yeah, that was funny. Yeah, it was an amazing time and I'm so glad I got to share it with you. [Jesse] Oh, me too. Thank you, thanks for having me as your date.
