(16 May 2000) English/Nat XFA The poorest of the poor of Zimbabwe have virtually no hope for a better life after the next elections on June 24th and 25th. The ruling ZANU-PF of President Mugabe have been promising them improvement of their living conditions over the last 20 years. But hardly anything changed. And with the economy in ruin, the end of the dark tunnel is still not in sight. Mbare means "black area" and is the biggest township in Zimbabwe, just 5 kilometres (3 miles) south of central Harare. People here do not worry about farm invasions or tobacco sales. Daily survival is what it's all about here in the slums. Living conditions here are still very harsh and have hardly improved since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980. Mbare's residents are fed up with the continued promises by the ruling party ZANU-PF of President Robert Mugabe over the last 20 years. SOUNDBITE (English) "Before the elections they always use to say they are going to give some stands and the things are going to be like this... going to shift you out of those slums and out of those bad houses.... going to give you some houses. So this is being going on every election we've had before. I mean people have been saying maybe they are going to do it this time. But nothing has materialized. So people are kind of fed up." SUPERCAPTION: Lina Mupawa, township resident At every election the government has committed itself to better housing and living standards for the residents of the townships, but in reality nothing changes. So faith and trust in the ruling party is vanishing fast here. But many of the ZANU-PF candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections are still confident that Mugabe's party is here to stay. They believe they are unchallenged and can't imagine a Zimbabwe not ruled by ZANU-PF. SOUNDBITE (English) : "ZANU-PF is very popular in terms of generally popularity and numbers, and we will continue to thrive as a ruling party." SUPERCAPTION: Phillip Chiyangwa, ZANU-PF candidate in the upcoming elections For the people of Mbare the next elections are not about land but about human living conditions in the shadow of the Zimbabwe capital. They fear that once again they are the forgotten citizens of this country.
