Hamachi Swiftsure 2023 - 15 minutes before demasting

In May 2023 Hamachi participated in the Swiftsure Race. We had a shorthanded crew of three and a "set and forget strategy" - going upwind under reefed main and J3 and downwind with an A4 and minimum gybes (we only did three total). In this video we are on final gybe to Victoria and approximately five miles from Race Rocks. We are trying to sail hot to cut the corner but conclude here (or soon thereafter) to sail deep and go below Race Rocks. Boat is totally in control and within previous experience. Waves are steep and wind is starting to build further. After the video ends we rig the boat for a letterbox douse, just in case. 15 minutes after the final clip Hamachi is hit with a 30+ kt gust and the boat accelerates into a trough at 22 kts and plows into a wall of water. The A4 holds the bow down and we decelerate to 6 kts in two seconds (despite easing the kite). The mast breaks 10 ft off the deck and falls forward and to port. It took 45 minutes to cut the rig clear and we are grateful to S/V Annapurna (the first boat on the scene about 45 minutes after dismasting) for the initial tow away from Race Rocks.
