Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters continued on Monday, with officers detonating stun grenades and protesters throwing stones. At least 50 Palestinians were hospitalized after being injured in clashes with police at a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site, Palestinian medics said. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades, some of them landing in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest site. Footage from the Old Town filmed on Monday showed stun grenades exploding in an alley where Palestinians were gathered, before a group of Israeli security officers pinned a man to the ground. Earlier, police said protesters threw stones from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound onto an adjoining roadway, while Palestinians reported stun grenades fired into a mosque, injuring dozens. The site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, is considered the holiest site in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. The holy site and the Old City are the emotional ground zero of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US, European countries, the Pope and the U.N. secretary general have expressed concern over the growing tensions in Jerusalem and appealed for calm.
