Nintendo, you can't win and you know it. About a month ago, The Big House online Smash Bros Melee tournament was shut down due to Nintendo sending a cease and desist letter to tournament organizers. Those organizers, players, and fans had no choice but to cooperate, and thus ceased all operations. However, it didn't mean Nintendo won. Unfortunately for Nintendo these fans are resilient, and these fans stick together. The fans understand how important these communities are and how a common love for the games, people, and experiences are worth so much more than Nintendo will ever understand. Nintendo can't keep fan made projects like Project M and Slippi down. Splatoon fans could have just ignored this injustice, and instead said it was "their problem, not ours". But they didn't. In the recent Splatoon NA online open, about 30% of all teams that signed up had some variation of "Free Melee" in their team name. When Nintendo threatened to cancel the official tournament finals stream because of this, they stood their ground. If Nintendo themselves didn't want to host the tournament anymore, independent organizers like EndgameTV were ready to step up and save the day by hosting the tournament themselves. Splatoon likely irreversibly damaged their standing with Nintendo, and they're okay with that. Overall, this video is a testament to how powerful a community can be when it bands together. As someone who loves these games very much, myself and many, MANY others won't stand for it anymore.
