Welcome back to the YouTube Automation Mastery Program! 🚀 In today’s video, we’re discussing the second most important metric that YouTube notices after CTR — Average View Duration (AVD). This is one of the most powerful factors that decides whether your video will get more reach, go viral, or completely die out. 👉 What is AVD? Average View Duration simply means how much time, on average, viewers are spending on your video. If your video is 10 minutes long and people are watching 5 minutes on average, then your AVD is 50%. The higher this percentage, the stronger your video performs. 👉 Why is AVD important? YouTube wants to keep people on the platform for as long as possible. If your videos are able to hold audience attention, YouTube rewards you with more reach, higher impressions, and chances of going viral. If your AVD is poor, even your subscribers may not get your video suggested. 👉 Audience Retention Graphs We’ll also explore how to read YouTube Studio’s retention graphs. These graphs show where people skip, rewatch, or leave your video. This helps you identify the strong and weak parts of your content so you can improve future videos. 👉 Examples of Good vs Bad AVD For long-form videos (5–10+ minutes), maintaining above 50% AVD is considered strong. For YouTube Shorts, 100% AVD is the bare minimum, while 120%+ (repeat watching) is excellent. A low AVD signals boring or irrelevant parts in your video where people drop off quickly. This metric is not easy to improve — it requires smart content structuring, strong hooks, and consistent engagement throughout the video. But once you master it, your videos have a much higher chance of reaching thousands or even millions of viewers. So watch this full video to understand how AVD works, how YouTube analyzes it, and how you can boost it. In the next session, we’ll discuss the third and final key metric that completes the formula of viral videos.
