In late 2020 - Matt Grimshaw partnered with the two way humidity control pack specialists - Boveda - to produce a film about the rebirth of a veteran program closed by new Prop 64 rules. Re-released with permission - this is the four part version. In part one we follow the non-profit MEDVETS on its mission to restart the HEROES HARVEST; a veteran cannabis free donation program that gets high quality cannabis to any local vet that needs it, but with cannabis in legal limbo between state and federal law and recreational legalization in California actually making things worse, it's easier said then done. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join MEDVETS founder "Big Jake" Lawrence and solo filmmaker Matt Grimshaw (The Documattarian) on a journey through the heart of the legendary Emerald Triangle, working within absurdly restrictive state laws, all to restart a program to give cannabis away to a veteran community that's nearly invisible to the outside world but yet suffers a suicide rate double that of the civilian population. In part one we visit two of the donor farms and meet one of the veterans that MEDVETS seeks to help. Hear the stories and meet the people that helped made legal cannabis a reality, by growing it when it very much wasn't, and discover the generous nature of craft farmers giving their products away for free to veterans they'll likely never meet despite all the legal hopscotch. From Outlaws to In-laws - the HEROES HARVEST story. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background: Cannabis was made medically legal in California in 1996, through the passing of Prop 215 which led to an explosion of low-cost or even free medical donation programs. 20 Years later Prop 64 passed the California ballot making recreational cannabis legal in 2018, but with a high cost...legalization destroyed the free medical donation market by taxing free gifts at the same rate as recreational sales and free weed is one thing, but paying to give it away? In 2019 a law was passed that helped redress the balance opening up a legal pathway to tax-free donations, but it's not cheap and very far from easy. The HEROES HARVEST is a program developed by MEDVETS, a veteran designated non-profit based in Fort Bragg, California, to gather legal donations from high end farms in the Emerald Triangle and legally distribute them through local dispensaries to veterans in need (used for PTSD, TBI, pain management, insomnia, anxiety and mental health issues) - but it's the first program of it's type to try and use rules that are described by 'Big Jake as a "wet dog of a law" and in a marketplace that's evolving by the minute in a world gripped by a pandemic, there are no guarantees of success.
