When I first listened to Taylor's latest album the midnight it came out, "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" stood out to me for its nuance in song's plot. It highlights the narrator's significant other's inability to commit and it uses toys and childhood past times to symbolize their emotional immaturity. It affects the narrator's mental health, causing them to contemplate ending the unhealthy relationship, only to deny the signs to the listener (and obviously themselves) by telling them things will get better or they should've seen them when they first held/saw them. The narrator's conflicted, but they slowly start to understand they can't be with their avoidant significant other without damaging their own mental health. I modified the lyrics a little to reflect how a friendship with an emotionally distant person that gave me a credulous impression that he'd behave differently if I befriended him. Once I felt like I was some doll to put away for weeks due to that distance, I accepted that I had to let it go for both our sakes.
