With only 30 days before mass casualties begin, the group, led by Axel Gilberto, must track him down to uncover the cure. Unlike Watanabe’s past works, Lazarus features a tightly focused narrative with a constant ticking clock pushing the story forward. While some fans may miss the episodic detours of his previous series, the show compensates with intense, well-choreographed action scenes—enhanced by John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s influence. The animation, produced by Sola Entertainment and MAPPA, is incredibly fluid, sometimes almost unnervingly so. Beyond its action and style, Lazarus explores themes of societal struggle and a pharmaceutical apocalypse, making it especially relevant to modern times. Though it nods to Cowboy Bebop, it quickly carves out its own space, solidifying itself as another standout in Watanabe’s portfolio.
