Caxias do Sul, located in the Serra Gaúcha region, is a development hub and the second most populous city in Rio Grande do Sul, standing out as one of the main centers of metalworking and viticulture in Brazil. The legacy of its founders is visible in its architecture, culture, and especially in its strong industry. The city, which celebrates the heritage of Italian immigration, offers a rich historical panorama and a robust economy, attracting businesses and tourists. The history of Caxias do Sul officially begins in 1875, with the arrival of the first European colonists, who settled in the area initially known as "Sede de Nova Milano". The overwhelming majority of these pioneers were Italian immigrants, mainly from the Veneto, Lombardy, and Trentino-Alto Adige regions, seeking a new life and opportunities in southern Brazil. These descendants of Italians profoundly shaped the cultural and economic identity of the region, forming the basis of its agricultural and, later, industrial tradition. The city's name was changed several times before settling on Caxias, an homage to the Duke of Caxias, and later, Caxias do Sul, reflecting its geographical location. The Italian influence is notable not only in the language (with the presence of the Talian dialect), but also in the gastronomic traditions, religiosity, and fervor for work that propelled the growth of the locality from a simple agricultural settlement into a regional metropolis. Although Italians are the most prominent, the formation of Caxias do Sul also benefited from the contribution of other groups, such as the Portuguese (who already occupied the region before official colonization) and, to a lesser extent, Germans and other Europeans. However, the city's predominant cultural trait and economic engine are undeniably attributed to the vast number of descendants of Italian immigrants who settled and prospered in the region. Caxias do Sul possesses a significant architectural and cultural heritage, notably the Santa Teresa D'Ávila Diocesan Cathedral and the National Monument to the Immigrant. Planned urban development and the preservation of historical spaces coexist with modernity. It is an important university center, home to the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), which contributes to the training of skilled labor in various areas, strengthening innovation and the economy of Rio Grande do Sul. Among the city's most important streets, Rua Julio de Castilhos stands out. It is one of the main arteries of downtown Caxias do Sul, notable for its concentration of commerce, services, and historical buildings. The street is a central point of reference and circulation, reflecting the city's commercial dynamism and connecting important urban areas, being essential for the daily flow and social life of Caxias residents. The industrial sector of Caxias do Sul is diversified, with an emphasis on the production of buses, trucks, auto parts, and road implements, consolidating it as an industrial giant in the south of the country. The production of wines and sparkling wines, a legacy of Italian culture, also plays a vital role, with wineries that attract wine tourism and elevate the city's name on the national and international beverage scene.
