THE ROLEX GMT MASTER 1675 Innovative watch design is nothing new for Rolex. In fact, the company boasts numerous impressive accolades, such as the first waterproof wristwatch and the first jump date mechanism. Rolex was also the first company to commercially produce a GMT wristwatch capable of displaying more than one time zone. Of course, that watch was the famous GMT Master, developed at the behest of the now-defunct Pan American Company. Just as transatlantic flight was “taking off,” the company needed a quality, dual-time watch to issue their pilots. The GMT Master hit the market in the early to mid-1950s, featuring a unique two-tone 24-hour bezel and a 4th hand on the dial. The two colors on the bezel insert were meant to distinguish between day and night hours but have since become one of the most iconic properties of the GMT Master, earning it numerous charming nicknames through the years, including Pepsi, Coke, and Root Beer. The extra time zone can be read against the bezel via the GMT hand. Eventually, the GMT hand became independent of the other centrally-mounted hands, allowing the wearer to read up to three time zones simultaneously. However, vintage Rolex GMTs do not offer that feature and are only capable of reading local and home time. Rolex introduced ref. 1675 in 1959, replacing the inaugural ref. 6542 and introducing the collection to crown guards, “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text on the dial, and a new movement. Depending on the year produced, the ref. 1675 will feature either the caliber 1565 or 1575, the latter of which featured hacking seconds after 1971. The crown guards will be either pointed or non-pointed, and the dial will be either glossy or matte. Additionally, under ref. 1675, the GMT Master was produced in stainless steel, yellow gold, or two-tone and on the Oyster or Jubilee bracelet. Furthermore, the wearer had their choice of red and blue (Pepsi), brown and yellow (Root Beer), blue (Blueberry), and black bezel inserts and either black or brown dials. THE ROOT BEER GMT MASTER Today, our focus is on the Root Beer GMT, with its warm tones and resemblance to the popular soda. The first instance of a Root Beer GMT Master came in the 1970s. While there are a handful of variations on the market, its main features include a bezel in brown and gold tones and, often, a matching brown dial. BEZEL Our example features the classic two-tone bezel on a yellow gold mounting. Ours also features a service replacement insert that exhibits some signs of aging. DIAL This edition of the beloved Rolex Root Beer also features what avid collectors refer to as a “Nipple Dial” after the unique shape of the gold hour markers. Classic Mercedes hands circle the dial, featuring creamy Tritium lume. CASE The 39mm case is in great condition, featuring crisp serial and reference numbers, an acrylic crystal, and some scratches and nicks. The case also appears to have been polished, with the bevels still visible. BRACELET Our example wears on the classic 5-piece link Jubilee bracelet with American oval links in stainless steel and yellow gold. From the Nipple Dial to the two-tone Root Beer bezel and classic Jubilee bracelet, this iteration of the GMT Master exudes the charming vintage aesthetic that many avid luxury watch collectors desire. It’s a lovely example of the cult favorite Rolex Root Beer that would be a handsome addition to any watch box.
