On the night of 26 February 1992, during a mass massacre, the population of the small Azerbaijani town of Khojaly were virtually exterminated. The total death toll in Khojaly on that horrific night was nearly 1000. Even unarmed women and children fleeing Khojaly were ambushed by the Armenian forces backed by ex-Soviet motor-riffle regiment and brutally slain. Many victims were raped, mutilated and scalped as notorious Karabakh war trophies.
