First published in Cafe Royal Cocktail book by W.J. Tarling in 1937 this drink is an object of much fascination to bartenders as it’s a Bourbon drink which is tiki facing but not necessarily a tiki drink but created at the height of tiki popularity. This drink could very well have served as an inspiration to Eric Castro when he created the iron Ranger as the ideas are similar, but I don’t know that to be a fact, it’s purely conjecture on my part. Although not much is known about the origin of this drink it’s probable that it was an American Bartender driven to London by Prohibition. “Twisting The Lion’s Tail” was an American Slang expression for provoking the British which emerged during a period of American Anglophobia between World Wars.
