Examining the airway during sleep shows common types of obstruction in some people. Some people who have obstructive sleep apnoea with very loud snoring have collapse seen at the lateral pharyngeal wall. Here the side walls of the throat collapse so much that they touch in the mid-line causing very loud snoring. In this video you can also see that the tongue base falls back and obstructs the voice box (larynx). The tongue base in this case is covered in lymphoid tissue which is similar to tonsil tissue. In many cases people who have large tonsils still have problems when they are removed as these patients still have tonsil tissue that spreads down over the tongue base (like in this case).
