(13 Feb 2018) A nun whose recovery from decades of spinal problems was declared a miracle insists that she is "not a star" but just a "little sister" glad to be able to walk freely again. A French bishop declared on Sunday that Bernadette Moriau's recovery after she visited the shrine in Lourdes was a miracle. Sandro de Franciscis, head of the Lourdes Office of Medical Observations, told a news conference on Tuesday he was "totally convinced" that the cure had no medical explanation. Moriau had four operations on her spinal column between 1968 and 1975 and was declared a full invalid in 1980. One foot was permanently twisted, requiring her to wear a brace and use a wheelchair. She took what she said were significant doses of morphine for pain. Speaking in the town of Beauvais, northwest of Paris, Moriau described to reporters how she gave up morphine and her leg brace after visiting the shrine in 2008. "I'm not a star. I remain a little sister," she said. "I am here to bear witness, but I am not here to make you believe me." The pronouncement came after a decade of studies and tests by the International Medical Committee of Lourdes. The bishop has the last word on whether to approve a reported cure as a miracle. It was the 70th event to be recognised as an act of divine intervention at the world-famous Catholic pilgrimage site in southern France. The shrine in southern France where apparitions of Mary, Jesus' mother, reportedly appeared 160 years ago to a 14-year-old girl is considered a site of miraculous cures.
