How and how much can we save? With the increasing prices on feed and everything we need to find a way to save money so we are going to run a trial to see if fermenting food can save money and is worth the effort Trial details; 2 days.....feeding the same group of chickens to see how much feed is consumed Day1...... feed 11.2lbs of layer pellet.....7.8lbs consumed Day2.......fermented 11.2lbs of layer pellet yielding 35lbs of feed!! 18lbs fed and 15lbs consumed approximately. 11.2lbs of layer pellet will feed for 1.25 days 11.2lbs of layer pellet fermented will feed for 2 days this will save you 20-505 on your feed bill! things to keep in mind 1. layer pellets yield much more than scratch or whole grains 2.this trial also did not show how much less the chickens might consume due to the added nutrition value of fermented feed (short trial) 3. potential to lose a batch due to mold (I lost 2 batches) pros 1.cost savings 20-50% 2.healthier for your flock 3.not difficult cons 1.time consuming (3days per batch, frequent mixing) 2.potential to lose a batch 3. 24 hour shelf life 4. daily batch prep to keep daily feeding fresh (space required) We will continue to ferment our feed as the cost savings will be substantial as we have 40 chickens, 15 turkeys and 3 ducks that can all have the fermented feed. Thanks for checking us out. Subscribe I am making a video that shows how to maintain a fresh daily supply of fermented feed. Ozarks Homestead and Farm
