In Greek mythology, Polyphemus was the fearsome Cyclops, a one-eyed giant and son of Poseidon, who lived in a cave with his great flock of sheep. When Odysseus and his men landed on his island during their journey home, they were trapped by the massive boulder Polyphemus used to seal his cave. The giant devoured sailors one by one, but Odysseus devised a clever escape by blinding Polyphemus with a sharpened wooden stake. Calling himself “Nobody,” Odysseus tricked the other Cyclopes, and at dawn, he and his men escaped hidden beneath the bellies of the sheep.
