'Sita Kalayanam' - a song sung during South Indian weddings - is a kriti composed by the 18th-century Saint-Poet Thyagaraja (regarded as one of the legends of Carnatic music) in the raaga Shankarabharanam. The song was written to commemorate the beauty of love that was symbolised by the coming together of Rama and Sita, and was to invoke all good fortunes on the newly-wedded couple. In present-day weddings, by singing this song, the couple's union is perceived to be as sacred and wondrous as that of Rama and Sita, and the blessings of the Gods and near and dear are sought for a happy life together. At AIKYA 2014 - the fifth in a series of annual concerts organised by Global Adjustments - this beautiful song was rendered in a gentle, moving format, with the singers and instrumentalists accompanied for the first time by an entire string orchestra - which lent a special touch to the musical format. Listen to this melodious rendering of an ancient classic, and experience the love that is embodied in the union of two souls.
