(19 Sep 1994) STORY MILITARY DOLPHINS TRAINED FOR COMBAT Black Sea Naval fleet commanders have revealed the existence of a special base called Kazachia where sea dolphins are trained to perform combat tasks, such as underwater mine installation and the mounting of special espionage devices. The previously-secret base has operated since the 1960s, when the Russian navy adopted a doctrine that saw naval battles of the future as mainly "underwater affairs". Managed by Russian Navy officers, the base currently trains two dozen dolphins. Several sea lions are also being trained. Kazachia is located in a heavily-guarded area offshore from the main Black Sea fleet harbour of Sevastopol. Since the operation started, only a few outsiders have been allowed to visit. The dolphins have been involved in several rescue operations in the Black Sea. The best known was in 1986, when they provided underwater reconnaissance at the site of the sunken "Admiral Nakhimov" liner. More than 500 passengers died when the ship collided with another boat in Novorossiisk harbour. Dolphins are highly-intelligent, water-resident mammals who communicate via a sonar language-like communications system.
